Separate direction from movement
If you cannot point to your base, fix the route first. More speed cannot tell you which way to go.
Shorten the next run
Try a closer target with the same equipment. A successful shorter return helps distinguish distance from a control or route problem.
Change one variable
Keep the same target and return path when testing a speed improvement. If you change everything at once, you cannot tell which change helped.
Confirm delivery
Judge the run by the animal reaching your base, rather than by the egg opening or by the animal being picked up.
